Construction Site Crime Updates

2020 had its fair share of issues but in spite of the numerous obstacles, CPP of SoCal, with the support of our partners, was able to have many heavy equipment recoveries worth a pause. While the coronavirus pandemic has impacted all of us with a myriad of challenges, including a staggering uptick in all types of crime, community involvement is vital as we still face an uncertain economy and limited public resources. Our strong network led to these Top Recoveries of 2020.

Back where they belong

May 29 recoveries

CPP assisted in the recoveries of a John Deere 210L ($75,000) and a Bobcat T550 ($38,451). The JD 210L was taken from Atkinson’s job (on rent from United Rentals) in Limonite by a suspect who was eventually arrested on DUI charges after a “chase” through the city of Jurupa Valley.

The Bobcat was recovered when a CPP Law Enforcement contact reached out after seeing the unit in a suspicious location and asked for assistance. The unit had been stolen earlier that morning and had not yet been reported. Total Value: $113,451

February 20 recovery

CPP member Quinn Rental Services reported the theft of a GPS enabled CAT 289D from their customer’s job. A huge THANK YOU goes out to  San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies with their Rural Crimes Taskforce and the SANCATT team in San Bernardino for their assistance in recovering the stolen 289D. Value: $83,947

September 28 recovery

Sunstate Equipment contacted CPP to report the theft of a JLG G5-18A from their customer’s job in Los Angeles. It had been taken over the previous weekend. The unit was equipped with GPS and was reporting at a location in Los Angeles.

CPP reached out to our valued partners with the Taskforce for Regional Autotheft Prevention  in Los Angeles for assistance.

TRAP investigators were able to recover the unit within an hour of it being reported to CPP. A huge THANK YOU to the TRAP Team for their speedy response on this recovery! Value: $73,169

August 24 recovery

CPP member United Rentals informed us late on Friday, Aug. 21, of a stolen Case 580N EP that had been taken from a location in Riverside. The GPS was reporting at a border crossing in Texas.

Coordinated efforts by local law enforcement, United Rentals, CPP, and our new friends with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department in Texas, led to this unit being recovered before it crossed into Mexico. Value: $70,000

December 4 Recoveries 

POWELL CONSTRUCTORS REWARD / HOTLINE RECOVERY

CPP received a call from a concerned citizen in Thermal when one of our  Reward Hotline decals was spotted on  a piece of equipment that had suspiciously appeared and was being stored, partially covered, near the caller’s home. 

Further information revealed that the unit the caller was describing was aSullair compressor that was stolen from CPP member Powell Constructors in late November in Indio. A huge THANK YOU to the RAID team in Riverside County for their help! ValueE: $5,000

Sunstate Equipment Rentals

CPP member Sunstate Equipment Rentals reached out when their customer informed them of a stolen GPS-enabled  Magnum 56kw generator missing from a job in Inglewood.

CPP reached out to the TRAP – North Team for assistance while closely monitoring the location of the unit as it was on the move and heading toward Palmdale.

TRAP Detectives, along with local PD, approached the vehicle and unit to discover that one of the men was in the process of removing the Sunstate decals.

The driver of the vehicle was captured after a foot chase and both suspects were arrested. It was later discovered that the truck being used to tow the generator was also stolen from a location in Los Angeles in early November, and the driver of the vehicle was on probation for similar crimes.
